Washington Redskins Are in a Feud with Stephen A. Smith

After the Washington Redskins defeated the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday, a couple of players posted a celebratory video on Twitter. Defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois said the Redskins “run the damn East” and tight end Chris Baker exclaimed they’re the “real champs” of the division. Carnival barker Stephen A. Smith didn’t take too kindly to that.

In a rant on First Take Tuesday, Smith laid into the Redskins for celebrating their victory against a division rival. “Bravo. Bravo,” he said. “You’re the champions of the NFC East. Wow! I’m so touched! I mean, can we stop and throw a party in the nation’s capital? You are the champions of the NFC East. I’m so touched. I’m so touched. Where’s the tissues? Look, let me wipe my tears away. I mean, this is just so touching. I can’t believe it, I’m getting emotional right now. The Washington Redskins are the champions of the NFC East.”

It didn’t take long for Smith’s targets to fight back:

Smith has a history of feuding with professional athletes. Last year, he warned Kevin Durant to “not make an enemy out of him” after Durant called Smith out for predicting he would sign with the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency. Durant inked a contract with the Golden State Warriors this summer.

On Tuesday, Smith shot back at the Redskins, telling Baker he will fire more barbs on First Take this week.

Considering Skip Bayless’ First Take knockoff on FS1 is gaining in the ratings, Smith needs the extra eyeballs. Picking fights with professional athletes and then daring them to watch is one way to accomplish that.
